Welcome to Deep in the Meadow, a literate semi-AU Warrior cats roleplay site with a 200 word minimum. DitM features a sandbox play style, a stat system for character development, staff-run NPC accounts for events and encounters, and an overarching political landscape to help structure characters and interactions. Territories are refreshed, but will remain familiar to Warriors RPers. Play as a member of the four Clans or as a Clanless cat - and enjoy!
UPDATES - 01/19/18 An activity check is up here. It will run until Tuesday the 30th of January.
UPDATES - 01/17/18 In light of our near every-clan-wide ban/discouragement on apprentices staff wanted to address a few matters. We all know and can relate to the fact that training threads can get boring quickly, but we want to remind users that they don’t need to be the same old things over and over and over again; training threads can be fun, and the concepts that apply to being a warrior can be presented in fun and new ways. Linked are some threads that staff have themselves participated in that demonstrate a wide variety of different directions to tackle training threads from that range from puzzle solving, critical thinking, assassination attempts, games, and even role playing (patrols and the like can count as training threads too). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. If you want to request a flash event you can ask a staff member or purchase one in the shop, and if you need help brainstorming ideas ask on our discord—we’re a collection of creative folk and we can certainly help one another out. In keeping training threads interesting and fun we hope to get more people signing up to do mentor.
In the same stroke we staff have also noticed a trend in that some sign their apprentices up for mentors, ask for training threads, but then never respond to them (or take months), and in the end end up purchasing apprentice passes for their apprentices to get their names on time. Going forward staff will request you skip signing up for a mentor (you can npc one instead) and just purchase the apprentice pass to save desperately needed mentors for those who will participate and complete training threads so we aren’t wasting mentors/time.
UPDATES - 01/16/18 Starvation Notices have officially gone out in ThunderClan. To prevent more, and to prevent those who have received them from worsening, get your cats out in patrols and hunting! WindClan, not far behind ThunderClan, is officially on notice of starvation, too. Don't be like ThunderClan and put off hunting threads until it's too late.
UPDATES - 01/10/18 Staff has made a slight rule change. You can find this change noted on Rule #17 on the rule sheet, and explained in more depth on the bio guide (specifically the 'history' post, which is linked in Rule #17). Direct any questions to staff. Please make sure to read this update.
UPDATES - 01/09/18 Update concerning clans and clanless cats claiming and challenging for territory. Read about that here. As our largest clan on site we're officially giving ThunderClan a starvation warning. No one is starving quite yet, but they have rumbling bellies and an empty fresh-kill pile more often than not. Get out hunting, and not just on your own territory, ThunderClan, or risk finding starvation and illness notifications in your PMs ;D
UPDATES - 01/02/18 Happy New Year! We have a lot going on on site in terms of clan meeting and exciting, drama-filled going ons. Three of our clans have meetings up, and while two are further along than the third they are still in need of reactions to either help wrap them up, or to help their leader in making her decision. Give them a look: WC, RC, & SC. Once some of these big plot threads wrap up you can expect our next site gathering to get underway.
UPDATES - 12/27/17 There has been a change in DitM's staffing team as Cheshire has had to step away to tackle that thing we call life. You can read about that here. The staff team wishes Cheshire all the best, and a huge thank you for all they've done for the site! In light of how busy we still are we've promoted Yazsh, who has been helping the staff team already with mod stuff and flash event posts, to a full member of the staff team. Be sure to give the ma warm welcome and have patience with them as they learn the ropes! With Cheshire leaving that means Palefeather's and Graystar's plots are at a stand still, but since they are all sorts of tied up into the future of the site staff will be taking on the roles for at least a short while to keep things moving smoothly. Please direct all those character's plot questions to us. Rest assured we'll be working with Cheshire if we have questions, and the sand box environment, to see these through! Have patience with staff as well as we figure out what threads need to be done and get a handle on how to best play these characters. Thank you!
UPDATES - 12/24/17 A few days later than the set date, all accounts in the inactive category have been deleted. If that's you, you're welcome to rejoin at any time; staff can always pull things from the archives for you if you would like to remake characters. Just be aware that you may need to change names or face claims if they have been used in your absence.
UPDATES - 12/21/17 A happy Winter Solstice! Our season on site has been changed to Leaf-Bare. The staff team wishes happy holidays for those celebrating!
UPDATES - 12/06/17 The activity check is over and the site has been aged! Those members who did not respond or check in with staff have been moved to the inactive category and will be deleted on 12/20. If you were moved to inactive, just message a staff member with links to the items you need replaced and the accounts you need moved. For those of you still with us, please check characters' ages and active threads so you can claim any new stats. Please also check mentors & apprentices in case you have gotten a new mentor/become a mentor! Finally, many of us need to update our bios, at the very least to reflect name, rank, and sometimes Clan changes. If I have to call people out by name I will ;).
UPDATES - 11/29/17 We have an activity check going on! Link is here. Members have until December 5th to post. Please speak to staff if you don't think you'll be able to post by then. We are doing it a bit differently this time around so please be sure to read the post completely.
UPDATES - 11/15/17 A big thank you for all those who took the time to audition and show interest in ShadowClan deputy. After discussion between Rainbow & staff we congratulate Gillyflowerthroat (Mink) on getting the position. As promised if you have questions or desire tips in preparation for our next open high rank position you can send staff a PM or DM.
UPDATES - 11/09/17 New skin! Staff is still making tweaks to this top table potion (the link colors and navigation link colors) and to staff/site tables, but otherwise please let staff know if you still see any lingering green colors. A deadline has been set for ShadowClan deputy: Tuesday Nov. 14th. If you'd like to try out please send your auditions in before then, and if you think you will need more time be sure to let staff know.
UPDATES - 11/04/17 Auditions for ShadowClan deputy are now open. Audition form can be found in our high rank info board and all auditions should be sent to the staff team + Rainbow. A deadline will be set at a later date.
UPDATES - 11/02/17 Katzen has stepped back from the site and her role as ShadowClan's leader to focus on her senior year of college. To fill members in on what happened ICly with Vulturestar Rainbow has helpfully written a small AU you can read here.

ThunderClan's camp lies toward the north of their territory and is hidden away from prying eyes. Much of the camp's walls are built of large mossy stones, tumbled alongside and on top of one another long ago by nature or, as some claim, by StarClan themselves. Sheltering the other half of the camp is a group of trees, living and dead, that stand or lie at various angles and provide places for cats to take shelter. The leader makes their den along the stone wall, where a piece of stone leans against the wall to form a small niche. The nursery and medicine cat's den are along this wall too, where they are most protected; over time ThunderClan has dug out space under the wall for queens and kits, and a natural space created by a dense bush affords the medicine cat space for treating patients and for storing herbs. Sometimes, however, the herbs can get wet and turn bad. The elders, warriors, and apprentices sleep on the other side of camp, in or among the trees and logs. Elders usually shelter inside a hollow log, though they have been known to sleep outside when the weather is good. To address the Clan, the leader climbs on the Tall Branch above the area where the warriors often cluster.
The majority of the territory is made up of a leafy forest with thick underbrush and overhead coverage. Ground dwelling species, namely rodents, seem to make up the bulk of ThunderClan’s diet, but tree dwelling animals—like some mustelids and birds—are not out of their skillset, either. A small lake sits at the north portion of their territory with an abandoned cabin ripe with prey and trinkets; other clans often suggest ThunderClan grows fat from the easy prey it supplies. A graveyard of two-leg monsters mark the beginning of livestock fields, mainly sheep, that make up the rest of the clan’s territory. The sheep themselves rarely bother the cats, but their presence attracts numerous prey and predators to the area. Coyotes and fox seem to be the most troublesome, but the occasional mountain lion isn’t out of the question. ThunderClan cats seem to come in all coat colors, patterns, and lengths. They are often described as muscular cats; solid hunters and fighters capable of silently moving through underbrush.
RiverClan’s camp is in the quarry district of their territory. High, rocky cliffs, varying degrees of tree coverage, and man-made pools (rock quarries) filled with water define the area. The camp itself is set beneath a doming ceiling of stone that arches over to protect the camp. The camp is far from intricate; stones and vegetation are at the back of this dome that serves as RiverClan’s home. The leader’s den is located on ground level beneath leaning stones that form a shallow cave. Moss has been draped over the entrance as a means of privacy. The elder’s den and nursery are the most protected—both set in deep fissures in the stone wall that stay cool in the summer and provide shelter in the colder seasons. Warriors sleep more exposed with only a rocky outcrop and bramble walls for their den, and apprentices with something similar not far away. A singular pathway follows the right hand side of the dome with a wooden guardrail (human made) as a means to get in and out of camp if swimming is not preferred. A pool butts up to the camp that can also be used as a way in and out of camp with a thin waterfall that comes from the top of the dome. Meetings are called from a large jutting stone above the leader’s den called High Ledge.
RiverClan’s diverse territory is made up of water-filled quarries, forest, meadow, river, and waterfall and gives the clan access to more than their typical prey source of fish. While many RiverClanners remain staunch traditionalists and stuff themselves of fish, others branch and perfect stalking land based prey. Other clans fear they mean to take over the forest with their growing skillsets and taste for different prey, but the fears are yet unproven. Besides the fish the waters provide, RiverClan’s territory hosts rodents, small mammals, many species of songbird, ground nesting bird, and waterfowl and predators that include raccoon, fox, skunk, lynx, bobcat, and bear. RiverClanners are often described as beautiful cats with thick, silky pelts. Their colors trend towards grays, silvers, and calicos. They excel at swimming and fishing and often remain lean as a result.
This downed plane sits, an empty shell, atop a rocky ridge that affords excellent views of the surrounding area. Thankfully there are no Twoleg remains inside the craft, other than old seats and various fixtures. The plane is open to the outside in the middle and at the front, though the windows are still intact. Cats can take shelter in the compartments inside or under the wings, which extend -- mostly intact -- some distance from the body of the plane. They must take care, however, that they are not disturbed by other animals who would use its shelter. Meetings are called from the High Wing.
For as long as the clans could remember the expansive land between RiverClan and ShadowClan had been known simply as the Contested Territories, and for generations the two clans warred for ownership over them that would leave a bloody history and little love between them. However, it wasn't always that way; many moons ago, longer than the clan cats could remember, a fifth clan called those territories home. SkyClan has recently been resurrected with the help of StarClan and fought to reclaim their historic home piece by piece. The land is diverse with rainforest to the north, rich rivers, mountains, and even old mine shafts. SkyClan has historically been known for hunting in the tree-tops, but coming from a variety of backgrounds today's SkyClan will likely be more diverse.
Due to ShadowClan's original camp succumbing to a landslide, the new one has been moved to higher ground. The thick forest of pines continues uphill, where the new camp is nestled toward the top of the incline. While on the side that faces out toward Fourtrees, it's not likely you'd get much of a view from the camp itself, since it's nestled among the roots of the same pines that create the canopy ShadowClan is known for. Moss that gathers along the rocks makes for accessible bedding supplies, and the roots are strong and plenty enough to block the windchill and sunlight in the harsher seasons. The leader's den is located between two large roots that branch out from one of the larger pine trees, smaller roots tangling and intertwining above it to create a cover. The medicine cat's den is on the other side, located in a hollow at the base of the tree, and the nursery isn't far from it, one of the main roots stretching out from the hollow creating a cover above a divot in the rocks where moss likes to grow. The elders make their home in a bush that hangs over an era between more properly bedded roots, a sheet of rock providing a back wall while the roots make up the rest. The warriors' den is nestled in a tunnel under the roots, and the apprentices bundle up together in a hollowed out log from one of the long-since-fallen pines. The leader makes announcements from a particularly large root that leads out from the ones around their den, Tall Root.
ShadowClan’s territory is heavily shadowy pine forest. The pines don’t allow for much sunshine to reach the forest floor and as a result it remains clear unlike the thick unbrush of ThunderClan’s. The dampness isn’t horrid in the forest as it all drains downhill to the swamp in the southern reaches of their territory. A quaking bog, an odd phenomenon, grows over much of the swamp and acts as a giant waterbed. Hunting is good on ShadowClan’s territory and ranges from mammals to birds to amphibians to reptiles. Not picky, ShadowClanners excel at hunting amongst the forests’s shadows as well as the mucky, wet grounds of the bog and swamp. ShadowClanners tend to be darkly colored of any fur length.
The bulk of WindClan's camp, a fairly round space ringed with rocks, boulders, and enclosed on one side by a low ridge, is open to the sky and overlooks a valley. Their camp, while not protected in the same way as the other Clans', is fairly high up and they can see attacks coming from a long way off in any direction, making them difficult to surprise. It's also difficult to find their camp in the first place, as it's not set out with walls and such. In true WindClan fashion, warriors and apprentices will often sleep in the open, but there are clusters of bushes, overlaid with branches from shrubs and the few trees on the territory for warmth, that serve as shelter during the cold seasons or when the weather is bad. The leader's den is dug underneath the Tall Boulder, from which meetings are called. Unlike the warriors' and apprentices' dens, the elders' den, nursery, and medicine cat's den are far more well protected. Elders sleep in the shelter of a cluster of bushes, extensively reinforced with branches and grasses, while the medicine cat's den is a former fox hole, extended and widened to hold herbs and patients as well as the medicine cat themselves, in the lee of a ridge opposite the Tall Boulder. The nursery is nearby, dug into the ground where a fox had once made a home, and masked at the entrance by a thick bush, insulating the den from weather and forcing a bit more care when entering.
WindClan’s territory is open unlike the majority of the other clan’s territories. WindClanner’s claim to fame is their speed, and for their speed to be put to use they require few obstacles. Their territory ranges from rocky flatlands, hardy prairies, and even fertile farmlands, but each area just as treeless and lacking in thick undergrowth as the last. Their main source of prey is rabbits that live over all their territory, but the clan never passes up the ground nesting prairie birds and plethora of rodents, either. WindClan cats tend to sport neutral and short-furred pelts to both blend in to their territory and minimize drag while hunting. They tend to be lean, fleet-footed cats, but of course there is variation within their ranks.
Neutral territories, outside Clan borders and belonging to no cat, lie within.
These territories are sacred, marked by StarClan as places where fighting and bloodshed are forbidden. No one Clan may control these places, as they are meant for all the Clans to use for Gathering purposes and for leaders and medicine cats to confer with StarClan.
These lands mark the borders between Clans. Border patrols scentmark the lines to make sure no cat has any excuse for trespassing.
