ABOUT

Welcome to Deep in the Meadow, a literate semi-AU Warrior cats roleplay site with a 200 word minimum. DitM features a sandbox play style, a stat system for character development, staff-run NPC accounts for events and encounters, and an overarching political landscape to help structure characters and interactions. Territories are refreshed, but will remain familiar to Warriors RPers. Play as a member of the four Clans or as a Clanless cat - and enjoy!

SITE NEWS

UPDATES - 01/23/18 Site gathering is up here. Please do not post until the leader of your cats clan has. Leaders have the right to deny a cat access to the gathering and will let those who cannot attend know. The gathering can count as one of your active threads for the activity check.

UPDATES - 01/19/18 An activity check is up here. It will run until Tuesday the 30th of January.

UPDATES - 01/17/18 In light of our near every-clan-wide ban/discouragement on apprentices staff wanted to address a few matters. We all know and can relate to the fact that training threads can get boring quickly, but we want to remind users that they don’t need to be the same old things over and over and over again; training threads can be fun, and the concepts that apply to being a warrior can be presented in fun and new ways. Linked are some threads that staff have themselves participated in that demonstrate a wide variety of different directions to tackle training threads from that range from puzzle solving, critical thinking, assassination attempts, games, and even role playing (patrols and the like can count as training threads too). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. If you want to request a flash event you can ask a staff member or purchase one in the shop, and if you need help brainstorming ideas ask on our discord—we’re a collection of creative folk and we can certainly help one another out. In keeping training threads interesting and fun we hope to get more people signing up to do mentor.

In the same stroke we staff have also noticed a trend in that some sign their apprentices up for mentors, ask for training threads, but then never respond to them (or take months), and in the end end up purchasing apprentice passes for their apprentices to get their names on time. Going forward staff will request you skip signing up for a mentor (you can npc one instead) and just purchase the apprentice pass to save desperately needed mentors for those who will participate and complete training threads so we aren’t wasting mentors/time.

UPDATES - 01/16/18 Starvation Notices have officially gone out in ThunderClan. To prevent more, and to prevent those who have received them from worsening, get your cats out in patrols and hunting! WindClan, not far behind ThunderClan, is officially on notice of starvation, too. Don't be like ThunderClan and put off hunting threads until it's too late.

UPDATES - 01/10/18 Staff has made a slight rule change. You can find this change noted on Rule #17 on the rule sheet, and explained in more depth on the bio guide (specifically the 'history' post, which is linked in Rule #17). Direct any questions to staff. Please make sure to read this update.

UPDATES - 01/09/18 Update concerning clans and clanless cats claiming and challenging for territory. Read about that here. As our largest clan on site we're officially giving ThunderClan a starvation warning. No one is starving quite yet, but they have rumbling bellies and an empty fresh-kill pile more often than not. Get out hunting, and not just on your own territory, ThunderClan, or risk finding starvation and illness notifications in your PMs ;D

UPDATES - 01/02/18 Happy New Year! We have a lot going on on site in terms of clan meeting and exciting, drama-filled going ons. Three of our clans have meetings up, and while two are further along than the third they are still in need of reactions to either help wrap them up, or to help their leader in making her decision. Give them a look: WC, RC, & SC. Once some of these big plot threads wrap up you can expect our next site gathering to get underway.

UPDATES - 12/27/17 There has been a change in DitM's staffing team as Cheshire has had to step away to tackle that thing we call life. You can read about that here. The staff team wishes Cheshire all the best, and a huge thank you for all they've done for the site! In light of how busy we still are we've promoted Yazsh, who has been helping the staff team already with mod stuff and flash event posts, to a full member of the staff team. Be sure to give the ma warm welcome and have patience with them as they learn the ropes! With Cheshire leaving that means Palefeather's and Graystar's plots are at a stand still, but since they are all sorts of tied up into the future of the site staff will be taking on the roles for at least a short while to keep things moving smoothly. Please direct all those character's plot questions to us. Rest assured we'll be working with Cheshire if we have questions, and the sand box environment, to see these through! Have patience with staff as well as we figure out what threads need to be done and get a handle on how to best play these characters. Thank you!

UPDATES - 12/24/17 A few days later than the set date, all accounts in the inactive category have been deleted. If that's you, you're welcome to rejoin at any time; staff can always pull things from the archives for you if you would like to remake characters. Just be aware that you may need to change names or face claims if they have been used in your absence.

UPDATES - 12/21/17 A happy Winter Solstice! Our season on site has been changed to Leaf-Bare. The staff team wishes happy holidays for those celebrating!

UPDATES - 12/06/17 The activity check is over and the site has been aged! Those members who did not respond or check in with staff have been moved to the inactive category and will be deleted on 12/20. If you were moved to inactive, just message a staff member with links to the items you need replaced and the accounts you need moved. For those of you still with us, please check characters' ages and active threads so you can claim any new stats. Please also check mentors & apprentices in case you have gotten a new mentor/become a mentor! Finally, many of us need to update our bios, at the very least to reflect name, rank, and sometimes Clan changes. If I have to call people out by name I will ;).

UPDATES - 11/29/17 We have an activity check going on! Link is here. Members have until December 5th to post. Please speak to staff if you don't think you'll be able to post by then. We are doing it a bit differently this time around so please be sure to read the post completely.

UPDATES - 11/15/17 A big thank you for all those who took the time to audition and show interest in ShadowClan deputy. After discussion between Rainbow & staff we congratulate Gillyflowerthroat (Mink) on getting the position. As promised if you have questions or desire tips in preparation for our next open high rank position you can send staff a PM or DM.

UPDATES - 11/09/17 New skin! Staff is still making tweaks to this top table potion (the link colors and navigation link colors) and to staff/site tables, but otherwise please let staff know if you still see any lingering green colors. A deadline has been set for ShadowClan deputy: Tuesday Nov. 14th. If you'd like to try out please send your auditions in before then, and if you think you will need more time be sure to let staff know.

UPDATES - 11/04/17 Auditions for ShadowClan deputy are now open. Audition form can be found in our high rank info board and all auditions should be sent to the staff team + Rainbow. A deadline will be set at a later date.

UPDATES - 11/02/17 Katzen has stepped back from the site and her role as ShadowClan's leader to focus on her senior year of college. To fill members in on what happened ICly with Vulturestar Rainbow has helpfully written a small AU you can read here.

Wheatstorm may have been an accomplished warrior but he was certainly no stick in the mud. After things had calmed down with Blackeagle and Graystar seemed to settle into his new position, he was up to his old antics. Brindleberry, bless her heart, had been practicing sparring with him on occasion. At first he had his reservations about the elderly kitty-pet but once he got to know her, his biased views seemed to have been erased completely. It was probably unfortunate that Brindleberry made a friend out of him because she wouldn’t be an exception to his playful (but well meaning) antics. The tom concocted a plan with the help of his darling, stumpy-legged mate, Lightberry. He couldn’t hold an assessment but he could certainly test the medicine cat’s capabilities. It was all part of her training and there was no way she could get mad at him for what was about to take place.

An impish grin flickered over his maw as he trotted over to the medicine cat den. He looked around carefully and it seemed like everything was well. He made his face as serious as possible as he took a few steps into her den. “Brindleberry?” he called, eventually spotting her toward the back of the den. “Cranefrost requests that we go out in search for herbs around Lupine Lake.” The notion probably seemed a bit fishy but perhaps she wouldn’t know the difference. She was still adjusting to clan life. He put on an award winning smile and all but ushered her out of the den so they could head out to the lake.

The lake was the perfect location. They wouldn’t be far from camp in case someone needed her and the chance of running into an actual threat was slim to none. Plus, the fragrant flowers would easily hide Lightberry’s scent (where she would no doubt be waiting in ambush). It was the perfect plan and he couldn’t wait to see it unravel.

YOU NEED ME
Wheatstorm was one of the first WindClanners that Brindleberry felt a genuine connection with. It was incredibly easy for her to become attached to cats, but the feeling wasn't always mutual--especially not in WindClan. There were cats like Littlewind and Lightberry--kind almost-friends--but she could confidently call Wheatstorm a friend. He'd helped her immensely since her joining, patiently reciting code every time she forgot and trying to teach her to fight despite her limitations. He didn't seem enthused about her joining, but he still helped her every step of the way, which she was endlessly grateful for. She felt worthier of her nest and name thanks to the skills and wisdom he'd given her.

She wasn't surprised when he entered her den calling for her. She'd been mixing a couple especially aromatic herbs to freshen the scent of the den, and she quickly pushed those aside for another time and greeted the tom. He claimed Cranefrost was sending them to the lake to search for herbs, and Brindleberry took him at his word. She might've been doubtful about Cranefrost's knowledge of herbs, but she trusted Wheatstorm's intentions and followed him without a second thought.

"Lupines can be used for a variety of purposes," she mused aloud, deciding to teach Wheatstorm something for once. "But in the wrong hands, they can be deadly. I personally think they're better left to admire than use, but they might come in handy if I run out of other things." She looked around the base of the flowers, searching for smaller plants hiding in their shade. Too focused on her work, she didn't notice any sign of movement or Lightberry's pale fur beneath the surface of the flower field.

time for tea, time for tea
bread and jam and company
Lightberry was taking the whole thing a little too seriously. She’d made a point to marinate in the flowers properly before even going near the location of their surprise assessment. While waiting the enthusiastic she-cat attempted to stick flowers in her short pelt for an added layer of camo. Of course, this didn’t pan out as she’d intended, but a few scattered petals and leaves remained. And when a patrol had passed her by in the midst of this preparation she obstinately refused to explain why a full-grown molly was covered in plant debris and out alone in a rogue infested territory. Eventually they’d given up.

Useful or not, she was entirely ready by the time Wheatstorm led the ex-kittypet into the trap. Lightberry bid her time, waiting for them to draw nearer, and listened to the enthralling conversation. Dangerous flowers? What could be more interesting? She was just about to ask what hands were when the silly cat remembered the whole purpose for the outing. It was just like Lightberry to get caught up in conversation when something else was to be done. After a brief self-scolding, she prepared to pounce.

One. Two. Three. With a waterfall of flower petals the little cat leapt from her hiding place and launched at the medicine cat’s back. Mid-air, she’d try to grab Brindleberry’s scruff and use it to pull her forcefully to her side on the ground as she too landed on her side. If successful, this would leave Brindleberry’s back unprotected and facing all of Lightberry’s sheathed claws and paws.

Brindleberry, bless her pure heart, believed Wheatstorm without a shadow of a doubt. It almost was enough to make him feel bad for what he was about to lead her into but he quickly stomped that feeling down. Every apprentice received an assessment when they were of warrior age and even though Brindleberry was a medicine cat she deserved to be tested along with the others. Perhaps it was unconventional but he believed that his little test would be beneficial to her in the long run. She might box his ears and call him crass names when it was all said and done but he certainly wouldn’t regret it. The tom strolled beside the she-cat as he led the way to Lupine Lake. He knew his crafty mate would be waiting somewhere within the waves of purple flowers. A knowing smile tugged at his maw but he forced himself to pay attention to what his current companion was saying. Apparently, lupines could be deadly. The thought never occurred to him and he found himself growing curious. “Are they toxic?” he asked. The tom didn’t know a lick about medicinal herbs. He knew about poppy seeds and cobwebs but that was pretty much the extent of his knowledge.

He watched as Brindleberry rooted around the flowers. His ears swiveled and he swore he could hear movement somewhere nearby. Eventually, his beautiful, flower riddled mate appeared out of nowhere and launched herself at the medicine cat. Wheatstorm danced out of the way so that the pair could spar properly. He was curious to see how the older she-cat would react and if their ground combat would come into play.

YOU NEED ME
Medicine was something Brindleberry could genuinely get excited about. There was so much to know about different plants and techniques, and there was nothing she loved more than when other cats showed interest in those things as well. Maybe interest wasn't the right word in this instance, but Wheatstorm's question was enough to draw a smile from Brindleberry. "Lupine is helpful when you get the dosage right. Too much or too little can be harmful and, as you said, toxic. Carrie--well, my twoleg--is the one I learned everything from. We lived next to a lupine field. I think she was an expert at using them, though she mostly liked them for their scent and beauty."

Her smile grew nostalgic, and her attention was even further from Wheatstorm's plan. She didn't notice anything strange until she heard a rustle behind her that couldn't have been Wheatstorm. Before she could turn around, a weight gripped the back of her neck, and she could feel her paws begin to slip. Her body wriggled wildly as she tried to regain her stance and get away from whatever had grabbed her. So addled, she didn't notice the heavy WindClan scent, nor did she think to unsheathe her claws. Her only immediate reaction was a confused mrrow? of sorts. The moment her body was completely on the ground and the grip on her didn't feel as strong, she rolled toward whatever it was against her and tried to shove it away with all three limbs.

Down they fell beneath Wheatstorm’s watchful gaze. Lightberry braced her shoulder for the impact, but it still jarred her body. She gasped and her hold on Brindleberry’s neck loosened. It was only for a heartbeat, but to her surprise the medicine cat was fast to act. The other cat rolled and Lightberry wheezed when a dappled body squished her legs and snuffed her muzzle into the dirt.

Immediately letting go of whatever scruff she still held, Lightberry tried to push off from the dirt and scramble away. Simultaneously a hard shove from Brindleberry hit her gut and made the warrior wince. She was free now, though, and in two flicks of a tail she was back on her paws. Winded, but not deterred by the sensation, Lightberry moved to attack her opponent again before the three-legged cat could get off the ground.

She skirted around the molly’s paws and then darted in with the intention of grabbing Brindleberry’s tail between her teeth. If successful, she’d bite down just hard enough to assure her grip wouldn’t easily break, but not enough to cause any damage. No matter how important it was to give Brindleberry a fair test, Lightberry would never harm a clanmate.

YOU NEED ME
When Brindleberry had enough space to herself, she writhed on the ground, trying to reorient herself and get her legs back beneath her. She swung her head around as she planted her forepaws firmly on the ground and tried to push herself up. "Wheatsto--?" she tried to call out to her clanmate, only to be interrupted as something firm clamped down on her tail. It was panic more than pain that prompted her to shout. Where was Wheatstorm? She didn't think he would've left the area, and he wasn't the cat attacking him, so what was he doing? Was he watching this happen?

She couldn't wait for Wheatstorm's assistance or explanation, however. The tug on her tail prevented her from fully righting herself, and the only thing she could do was ball back up, using her side to propel her toward the cat at her backside. She went for their face, swatting and attempting to wrap her paws around their neck so she could hold them in place and bite at their neck. Her eyes caught the flash of cream that marked the cat's--it was a cat's--pelt, and when her nose got close to the fur, her senses were filled with WindClan scent.

It left her more confused than she had been before. Had Wheatstorm set her up? He wouldn't... but there was no other explanation she could think of. There was no denying that her attacker was a clanmate, and she was too startled by the situation to really realize that the cat wasn't fighting with their full strength.

I'll blend up that rainbow above you & shoot it through your veins
Wheatstorm danced out of the way as his darling, flower-riddled mate burst out from beneath the undergrowth. He trusted Lightberry and he knew she wouldn’t take the test too far. He watched with narrowed eyes as Brindleberry reacted, albeit, sluggishly. His friend attempted to call out to him but he ignored it. Instead he watched as the two she-cats grappled. He had spent a fair amount of time with the medicine cat and he wanted to see her succeed. He wanted to see her think and hold her own if worse came to worst. The spotted tom didn’t think Brindleberry was doing half-bad. Her reaction may have been slow but she was making up for it. The three-legged cat was attempting to warp her paws around Lightberry’s neck. If the move succeeded, then perhaps she would have a chance. Ground wrestling was her best bet and he also wondered how his mate would react to such a tactic.

However, Brindleberry looked as though she was beginning to realize that the attacker was a clan mate. Oh he knew he would catch wholly hell from her once she found out that he set this entire thing up but he couldn’t help himself. His lesson was educational and maybe Brindleberry would come to see that. A purr rose in his throat and humor lit up his eyes. “Come on, Brindleberry! Use those moves I taught you and pin the dreadful, flower beast!” He cheered, hoping that she wouldn’t stop fighting altogether.

Still holding onto Brindleberry’s tail, Lightberry watched as the ex-kittypet expertly maneuvered herself on the ground. Within a heartbeat the short molly had her face harassed by a series of swats. She squinted to protect her eyes, let go of the tail, and took a hasty step back. But Lightberry was too slow. Before she could get out of reach paws wrapped around her neck.

Lightberry yelped in fear as teeth gripped her neck. She wasn’t the best fighter herself, and she hadn’t expected Brindleberry to be quite so adept. The ferocity of the other’s attacks made it clear they still saw this as a real fight, and that put Lightberry in danger. She was thankful, then, when her better-late-than-never mate called out. Surely his teasing words would make it clear this was a test, and not a real attempt on Brindleberry’s life.

Trying to keep the mood light she playfully roared, “Grrawr! I'm an evil flower!” Even so, Lightberry’s hackles had begun to rise of their own accord. The small cat braced her back legs and shook her head and upper body furiously in an attempt to wiggle free from the other’s grip. Even if it didn’t work there was a high chance her noggin would thump against Brindleberry’s, which would probably just hurt them both.
